North Africa is often glossed as Middle Eastern—not really African, on the one hand, and uniquely Islamic, on the other. She urged us to learn more about “tribal” communities in India, and said that we can still see ongoing legacies of British imperialism therein as well as the ongoing internal pseudo-imperialism, definite-bias against “tribals” or Adivasis from mainline, casted Hindus. Both matter. We talked about their famous tattooing and print practices. We also talked about the Ramcharitmanas in this capacity. It’s a poem from the 16th century by a notable figure named Tulsidas. It’s in an Eastern dialect of Hindi, on purpose—most historians agree that Tulsidas, who was very, very literate and prolific, purposefully wrote the Ramcharitmanas in this dialect of Hindi to make it accessible. For goodness sake, he wrote a musical number about the Inquisition where he played Torquemada and comedian-cum-Rabbi Jackie Mason sings about being tortured for being Jewish whilst chained up in a dungeon. You don’t write that stuff—that zany, skewering, satirical stuff—if you do not fundamentally understand how religion, power, and history worked. History of the World Part 1 is basically a series of sketches about history, how power works, and why it’s ridiculous. As Ilyse says often, one of the reasons she loves being a historian is that you cannot make this shit up—if you wrote fiction with some of the twists and turns in actual historical events, an editor would tell you it’s too much, too unbelievable, you’ll lose the audience.
